Before there was a definition

Planck introduced discrete energy elements as a way to solve the spectrum of heated objects. Einstein took the proposal seriously: light itself, he argued, could transfer energy in localized packets later called photons.

A staircase allows only certain heights, unlike a ramp. Atomic energy levels resemble the staircase, though the reason is a wave equation rather than carpentry.

A simple explanation

Start with the shape of the idea.

A quantum is not a tiny universal object. It is a discrete amount associated with a particular physical quantity. A photon is the quantum of the electromagnetic field; its energy is proportional to its frequency.
