Heisenberg formulated uncertainty in 1927 while building a mechanics based on observable quantities. Later mathematics separated intrinsic state uncertainty from the disturbance caused by a particular measurement.

A short sound pulse contains many frequencies; a pure tone extends over time. This Fourier relationship resembles the position–momentum tradeoff.

A simple explanation

Start with the shape of the idea.

Position and momentum are represented by noncommuting operators. A state tightly localized in position necessarily contains a broad range of momenta.
